50 YEARS OF AICA
The publication, Histoires de 50 Ans de l’AICA/ Historias de 50 Años de la AICA/ Histories of 50 Years of AICA (2002) is the only extensive account that exists, of the origins and evolution of the Association, and even there, the two main historical essays, by Hélène Lassalle and Ramón Tíó Bellido, are only in French.
The present small book attempts to redress this omission, by publishing these two essays in translation. Tió Bellido has amplified his text with a substantial amount of material resulting from fresh research into AICA’s relations with UNESCO and major involvement with a proposed centre for Archives of Contemporary Art and a magazine, AICARC, for contemporary art and documentation. Finally, Henry Meyric Hughes has added a chapter, outlining the rapid changes of the last decade or so, with the growth to maturity of ‘The Age of Globalisation’. An expanded appendix has also been added to the first version of AICA’s history, as well as some new available photographic documents. Ideally, a fuller account will come to be written, at some point, with an analysis of what globalisation already meant, in practical terms, in the early years of the Association, when lively new Sections were established in wide areas of the ‘Second’ and ‘Third’ Worlds, as they used to be called, in South America, Asia, East Europe and the Middle East. In the meantime, this publication, with its historical insight and wealth of factual information provides an indispensable introduction to the history and aspirations of the Association, as a whole, as it embarks on an exciting new chapter in its development.
